Double date night was at risk when a big snow storm hit on Friday night at rush hour. Did it stop us? No way! We spent more than an hour trying to get to the Soiled Dove Underground and are so glad we did.
We saw "The Three Amigos"--Roger Clyne, Jim Dalton, and Johnny Hickman play their live show and it was a hoot! They took turns praising each other, playing each others tunes, and taking shots from the audience. By the end, Hickman could hardly stand! They had fun, we had fun, and I'm glad we didn't let the storm stop us from enjoying a night out with the Krumpys!

“Pilgrims travel to Jerusalem to see the Holy Land, and the foundations of their faith. People go to Washington, D.C. to see the workings of government, and the foundation of our country. And fans flock to Nashville to see the foundation of country music, the Grand Ole Opry.”-Brad Paisley Going to the Grand Old Opry has been a dream of mine for years! As a small child, I remember turning on the Opry on Saturday night and seeing all the live performers sing their hearts out. When I made my list, I added this right away and for my 40th birthday Luke decided to make this dream come true.
We rode the Uber over to the opry and spent some time checking out the Gaylord Opryland hotel before the show. It was magnificant--such beautiful gardens and fun people watching. The Opry show tonight featured performers new and old. We saw four Opry member: Steve Warner, Jeannie Seely, Riders in the Sky and Connie Smith. The highlight for me was seeing Carly Pearce and Michael Ray (newly engaged) sing "When you say nothing at all" on stage. This was our wedding song and it was perfectly timed. (See the video here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/jYP3ZXnxNLYWdck66). We also got to see Mitchell Tenpenny play his Opry debut with a touching tribute to his dad. Just like my childhood memories, this show reached both young and old with its great mix of performers. We enjoyed the night--we sang along, laughed at the hosts, met a neat family from Mississippi and celebrated country music! I can't wait to come back and see the Opry--next time we will try to see them play the Ryman Auditorium where it originated! "Good Lord, show me the way." -Lyrics, Down to the River to Pray I am not sure I would say this is a "country" album as much as a bluegrass album, but with that out of the way I have to say I really enjoyed it. Some of the oldies (You are my sunshine, Rock Candy Mountain) made me smile with memories of the sing along on the Old Mill Inn where I spent many summer evenings with my grandmother.
My favorite song on this album was definitely Alison Krause's "Down to the River to Pray." I love her voice and the lyrics are so beautiful. There is something lost when we layer so many instruments to everything--this acapella song was stunning! I'm not sure I would listen to this album often, but it was great background while grading and it left me happy. A win! "No offense to men, but I think it's safe to say most of my music is geared toward the female listener." -Shania Twain An old friend appeared again on my list this week and the timing was perfect. The Woman in me came out in 1995 as I was trying to figure out what type of woman I wanted to be. "Any Man of Mine" spoke to my heart as I longed to be a fiercely independent woman who wanted to be a partner in a relationship not lesser. "God Bless the Child" spoke to my soul as a christian. The fun beats of "(If you're not in it for love) I'm outta here" matched my take on life.
Fast forward 23 years, and I still love this album. I have had a super busy week so spending an hour listening to this old favorite as I puttered in my office making art was perfect. It took me back to an "easier" time when there wasn't so much pressure. and you know what? It was a great reminder that taking time to enjoy in simple pleasures was much needed today. I have a smile on my face, a song in my heart and I'm ready to be a fiercely independent woman once again. "I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane." -Waylon Jennings I LOVED this album. From the first notes of "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean" to the final bar of "Are you sure Hank done it this way," Jennings is unapologetically himself. His music captures a feeling of being who you are and living life. I added nearly EVERY song to my country playlist and have listened to it for several days in the row. I now understand why everyone is so big on Waylon--he is awesome!
"Singing is a just a feeling set to music." -Carrie Underwood So, I don't know if it is because I was a new mom when this album came out, a busy teacher, or lived under a rock, but today was the first time I had ever listened to Some Hearts by Carrie Underwood. The verdict? I LOVED it!
This album is DEEP with great music ranging from sassy (Before he cheats) to beautiful (Jesus Take the wheel) to meaningful (Wasted). Carrie Underwood is incredibly talented and her message of living life to the fullest made my heart smile as this is my current life focus. I will definitely add this album to my playlist rotation--it was great to work to as I cleaned up my desk this morning. Can't wait to listen again. "I think a guy who's had just the right amount of booze can sing the blues a hell of a lot better than a guy who is stone sober." -Charlie Rich Classic country. This is the best description for this album. Charlie Rich has rich lyrics and melodies to tell stories of long gone wrong. Although I would probably not buy this album, I did enjoy working on an online class as I listened to it. My favorite song on the album was "Behind Closed Doors"--it should be on every romance play list out there.
"As long as old men sit and talk about the weather, As long as old women sit and talk about old men." -Randy Travis Timeless is the first word that comes to mind when thinking about this album. From the initial like on "Too gone for Too Long" to the final cord on "We're Gonna Tear Down the Walls" old time country shines. The sweet melodies, great guitar licks and honkey tonk feel made me smile--this is a great album to clean too! So glad I listened through--my favorite is still this one: "Music keeps you eternally young. It just does."-Garth Brooks The minute this album came on, I was instantly transported back to middle school. The summer between 7th and 8th grade, my family built my parent's dream house. Each day we worked on the house with country music blaring on the radio--filled with the songs from this album.
I love every single song on this album. I could listen to it over and over. Listening to this old friend as a grown up, the themes of blessings and appreciating them really surfaced for me. "If Tomorrow Never Comes" reminds us of the importance of our people knowing exactly how we feel about them with our actions and deeds. I am confident that my family would know that I adore them if tomorrow doesn't come. "Much too Young" made me laugh. My hubby recently turned 40 and seems to be falling apart. I hope I don't start falling apart at 40! "Of emotions, of love, of breakup, of love and hate and death and dying, mama, apple pie, and the whole thing. It covers a lot of territory, country music does."-Johnny Cash Country music has always held a special place in my heart. Whether it is my small town roots, my love of honky Tonks, or the rich stories it tells, Country always brings a smile to my heart. So, for my next musical adventure I decided to listen to the Top 25 Country Albums of all time as determined by Billboard.
The first two albums have already visited on my journey--check out my previous posts about them: Shania Twain- Come on Over (Click here for my review) Garth Brooks-No Fences (Click here for my review) |
