"But I would walk 500 miles, And I would walk 500 more Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles to fall down at your door" -The Proclaimers I need to move more. As an overweight person, I know this, but it is incredibly hard for me. I don't actually like to exercise other than swimming, but that takes time I don't feel like I have. So, this school year, I have set the goal of walking 500 miles. To help me stay motivate, I am going to track my progress as I "walk" the Colorado trail from Denver to Durango. There are 28 segments (+5 More from the alternate Colligate Route) that result in a total journey of 568 miles. I will use my Fitbit and phone to track steps along the way. I probably won't post all the time about this--step counts are BORING. But, I will update you once a month to see how far I've come and hold myself accountable. Today was day 1 and I finished 5.7 miles. Only 562.3 to go!!!!

“Of all the strategems, to know when to quit is best.” -Chinese Proverb As summer started, I added completing the Index Card A Day Challenge to my life list. As I spent the spring looking for art journaling and mixed media inspiration, this challenge kept coming up and I was intrigued. The premise was simple--create a piece of art every day for 61 days on a note card. That’s it!
Well, I started and made it through the first 20 days. But then I had a realization--it was becoming a chore rather than a joy. After racking my brain each day for what I could put on the notecard to meet the prompt, I had spent my creative energy for the day. It wasn’t fun anymore. So, what do we do when something isn’t working? We stop. So I did. Here are some of the cards I created--hope you enjoy them. And now I am off to make art that I love instead. “Sometimes the heart sees what’s invisible to the eye.” -H. Jackson Browne I love TED Talks! I love how passionate the speakers are about their topics--it reminds me how much I love teaching. I love the wide variety of topics, of people and of ideas that are covered. And most of all? I love that they are short enough to keep my attention. (Especially during the school year when that can be a trick after a long day.) So, attending a live TED event made it on to my list. TedX Denver hosts 1-2 events each year and this year the them was Uncommon and talks were set to feature an amazing array of people. As soon as tickets went on sale in March, I bought a set for Luke and I to go.
Well, fast forward to Memorial Day. It has been a LONG spring at our house. Luke has new responsibilities at work and I did to as we moved into our new school. The words “survive” and “almost there” and “tired” littered our conversations all the time. A banner came up on Facebook for $15 plane tickets to Vegas. Could this be true? Well, come to find out, they were! However there was a catch--it would mean missing the TEDX event. Oh, no! What to do? I hate wasting money, but I felt that a few days out of town with the hubby was truly what our family needed. So, I said no to my list and yes to my heart. I posted the tickets on facebook and they were snapped up by a friend at work quickly. We made arrangements for the boys to go to my parents and we headed out of town. I am putting going to a TED Event back on my list--the opportunity will come around again. Our trip to Vegas was just what the doctor ordered--we rested, reconnected, and realized that we had to fill up our buckets. It was perfection! "Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious."-Stephen Hawking Space science has been one of my loves though out my entire life. I remember in 1989 seeing Stephen Hawking on television talking (through his computer) about A Brief History of Time and being mesmerized by it. Throughout the years, he has become a pop icon for science and one of the items when I made this list was to meet this incredible man.
Today, this great man passed away and this list adventure was lost. The closest I ever got was having the same flight coach on my ZeroG flight as he did. She talked about his joy at the adventure when we were on our flight. I hope we all get to have the same joy in our lives! *Trivia: Steven Hawking was born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death. He died on Einstein's 139th birthday and on Pi day, the day each year when scientists and mathematicians celebrate the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. "My motto: 'No good movie is depressing. All bad movies are depressing."-Roger Ebert Every February, Movies come front and center in the space between the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Over the past several years, our movie watching has become SUPER heavy in super hero and sci-fi (Thanks in large part to living with my boys who're geeks). So, when I made my list, I thought that watching all of the "Best Movies" from the Oscars in my life time would help me branch out and grow my movie watching repertoire.
I set up a netflix DVD account (since so few are available on streaming) and filled it with 40 films. This weekend seemed like the time to watch the first one 1979's Kramer vs Kramer. As we settled in to watch, I giggled as I saw how young Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman were. As the movie delved into the awfulness of divorce and an ensuing battle, Luke asked me a question, "You do realize that all of these movies are going to be super serious, right?" Duh! I hadn't thought of that until that moment and I realized that I really don't feel like finishing this item on my list. I have enough stress/anxiety/drama in real life--I don't want to relax by watching more. I do want to put a movie item on my list but I am going to rethink it instead so it includes FUN and HAPPY movies! Stay tuned for my new item and help me say farewell to this one! |
AuthorAlmost 40 and tired of the treadmill, I am going to LIVE each day as a new adventure while finishing todo items on my life list. Mom, wife, teacher, geek! Archives
